About the Unit

The Organizational Communication unit is working on questions concerning communication management and communication planning (PR) as well as organizational and health communication. The focus is on strategic communication as a contributor to organizational (profit and non-profit) success and likewise on its implications for societal development.
Research on the role of communication for an organization as a process is seen as a main goal.
The unit was established in 1985 with a clear orientation towards economics and management. Public Relations and Organizational Communication became basic modules in the Bachelor and Master curriculum. Since 1997, students are able to specialize in the area of health communication.
The unit’s research work entails a broad socio-scientific approach and a distinct accent on the application of corresponding theoretical basics. The contribution of communication to reach organizational and social goals is explored. Over the years, research projects on the following topics have been accomplished: public relations of public administrations in Austria, public relations of scientific libraries, public relations and crises, health communication, public diplomacy, public relations in Austria: history, profession, professionalization.
Moreover, we conduct applied and practice-oriented research. Led by scientific members of the unit, students gain experience when contributing to those projects. Concurrently these activities are characterized by a high degree of scientific and furthermore practical and professional relevance.
