Concept
The Annual Review of Social Work and Social Pedagogy in Austria – OeJS – has been published since 2019. This scientific journal is a place of publication for disciplinary discussions. Research results and themes from Austria are presented while picking up on international discourses. The aim of the journal is to represent developments in social work and social pedagogy at a high level and to promote further discussion.
Volumes and their Focus Topic
Each edition concentrates on a particular theme. In addition, each volume features general contributions and book reviews: The first volume (2019) looked at “The Consequences of Child and Youth Welfare” ( PDF). The second edition in 2020 examined issues of “Migration and Mobility” (PDF).
The third volume, published in 2021, has a special focus on “Participation and Social Work / Social Pedagogy” (PDF). The fourth volume (2022) focuses on the topic “Political Implications of Social Work” (PDF). Volume number five (2023) puts an emphasis on “Personal Relationships and Social Interventions”, free access available via the publisher’s homepage.
Issue number six (2024) deals with “New directions for social work in times of increasing instability and precarity“. The seventh issue (2025) focuses on “Gender, Queerness, and Social Work – Recent Debates on Contexts of Sexualities, Power, and Domination” (PDF of CfP).
Ethics Policy and Quality Management
The OeJS only publishes original research contributions. All articles undergo a double-blind peer review process. Furthermore, the aim is for the yearbook to be included in international citation indexes. The OeJS is guided by the Ethical Principles for Educational Research of ÖFEB – the Austrian Association of Research and Development in Education, adopted in 2017. These codes of conduct substantially feflect the Core Practices, which the Committee on Publication Ethics – COPE – has developed for scientific publications.

[April 20, 2023] We are pleased to announce the publication of the fifth issue (2023) of our open access journal “Annual Review of Social Work and Social Pedagogy in Austria” (OeJS). This time the focus is on “Personal Relationships and Social Intervention.” A print version can be purchased for 29.95 Euros at bookstores, or directly from Beltz Juventa Verlag.
