Johannes (Jan) Karremans is Lise Meitner Fellow at the Department of Political Science at the University of Salzburg, conducting a research project on how governments in the Eurozone justify their yearly budgets. This research is aimed at exploring the broader question of how, in the current framework of European economic governance, national party governments deal with the dilemma between responsiveness and responsibility: on the one hand they need to be responsive to the demands of voters but on the other hand they need to be responsible towards European institutions. Alongside this research, Jan also collaborates as a research associate in a project on the governance of the EU financial market at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (European Univesity Institute) in Florence. Previously, Jan was a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon and he has been involved in various research projects at the European University Institute. In 2017, Jan earned his PhD in the Political and Social Sciences Department of the European University Institute. Prior to his doctoral studies, Jan earned his BA degree at the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam (2008-2011) and his MA at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (2011-2012). His research appears and is forthcoming in various leading journals in the field, such as West European Politics and Party Politics.
