Dr. Andrea Newerla is a Senior Scientist at the Department of Sociology at the University of Salzburg. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Philipps University Marburg (Germany). From 2012-2021, she was a research associate and lecturer at the Institute of Sociology at the Justus-Liebig-University Gießen (Germany).

Her wider research interests are rooted in intimacies, sexualities, aging society and end of live care. She is currently studying the processes of courtship and mating that are initiated by dating apps. Here, she is interested in the variety of intimate relationships that can be created through dating apps. Dr. Newerla has conducted two projects here: a) “Courtship, Dating, Apps – Encountering the ‘Intimate Other’ within Different Social Contexts” (2018-2020) and b) “Intimacies in the Corona Pandemic Beyond Hetero- and Mononormativity” (2020). In addition to scientific publications on this topic, Dr. Newerla made her topics accessible to the public via media such as  3sat,  ZDF,  taz, Ö1 etc. And she is a member of the research network mobilizing intimate relationship” (University of Salzburg).
