Exemption from waivers and refunds

  • Refunds will not be made if a degree is  completed in the current semester you are enrolled in.
  • Students who receive a grant from the „Studienförderungsgesetz” (Austrian federal aid for students) or who have their tuition fees refunded from another source are exempt  from the waiver or refund of tuition fees.

Penal Provisions

Students who obtain a refund of tuition fees by wilfully providing incomplete or incorrect information with respect to material facts shall pay the tuition fees retrospectively after termination of their studies without prejudice to legal action.
The following grounds apply to regular students (with the exception of third-country nationals with the residence permit “residence permit students”):
Multiple Degrees
The Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy will, on request, refund the tuition fees of regular students who undertake several degree programmes, provided that  a positive examination success rate of at least 15 ECTS (Doctoral studies  min. 8 semester hours) is  demonstrated. Applications should be made directly to The Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy.

Legal Grounds for Exemption

1. Pregnancy and Illness
If you are absent for at least two  consecutive months due to  sickness or pregnancy during a  semester in which tuition fees are to be paid, the tuition fees for the semester concerned will be refunded. The absence must cover a continuous period of two months.

2. Child Care
If you are the primary carer of a child until their 7th birthday or for those who may start school later, then the tuition fees will be waived for the duration of the child care.

– Child’s registration form (the given address of the child must correspond to that of the student)

3. Disability
Tuition fees will be waived for the duration of your degree without restriction, provided that a disability of at least 50% is determined according to federal regulations.

4. Study Assistance

5. Mobility Programmes
For students of the University of Salzburg, who carry out their studies in the framework of transnational, EU, work experience, state or academic mobility programmes (Outgoings). Tuition fees will be waived if a minimum period  of four weeks is spent abroad during a semester. (except for holidays and the periods when courses are not held)

6. Compulsory Study Abroad
Tuition fees will be waived for students of the University of Salzburg, who due to compulsory curriculum requirements, have to study abroad, if the period spent abroad is  a minimum of four weeks during a semester. (except for holidays and the periods when courses are not held)

7. Talented pupils
Tuition fees will be waived for a maximum of 2 semesters before taking the school leaving certificate for pupils who are nominated by The Austrian Research and Support Centre for the Gifted and Talented to visit courses as a non-degree programme students. A further waiver may be granted if  a positive academic success rate of at least 6 ECTS can be demonstrated.

8. Scholarship and grant holders
Scholarship and grant holders of the pre-doc  programme of the Austrian Academy of Sciences or similar programmes. The waiver will be granted for the duration of the scholarship. Confirmation of the grant must be submitted.

9. Disabled and  Chronically ill Students
Students who have a disability or chronic illness, but do not have an assessment or an assessment which is sufficient enough from the Federal Social Office for a legal waiver of tuition fees (polyarthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome etc..), will be taken into consideration individually. Separate proceedings will be arranged for this and they will be published in the newsletter of the University of Salzburg.
