From June 18 to 23, 2016, distinguished scholars from Australia, Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Austria, Germany, Canada, Italy, Japan, Russia, and other countries gathered once again in Salzburg for the Fifth International Conference on the Church of the East in China and Central Asia. The conference provided an interdisciplinary forum for the presentation and discussion of new research findings on East Syriac Christianity.

The wide-ranging program reflected the global scope of current scholarship and included contributions on Persia and Central Asia, Tang China, the Mongol-Yuan period, and theological developments of the Church of the East, as well as studies on manuscripts, inscriptions, and intercultural exchange along the Silk Road.

In addition to the academic sessions, the conference also included liturgical celebrations and cultural activities, highlighting the living traditions of Syriac Christianity.
