ZECO is dedicated to the comprehensive study of Syriac Christianity from its origins to the present day. Its research brings into focus the richness and diversity of this tradition, encompassing historical development, liturgical life, ascetic practices, and the theological expressions of the various Syriac churches.

Emphasis is placed on the critical edition of texts, including the application of digital methods in research, as well as their historical, cultural, and theological analysis and interpretation.

A further major focus is the Syriac reception of Greek antiquity. Particular attention is given to Syriac translations of Greek philosophical and scientific works, which played a crucial role in transmitting ancient knowledge to the intellectual cultures of the Islamic and Byzantine worlds.

Working closely with the Pro Oriente Foundation, ZECO actively shapes and leads ecumenical dialogues between all churches of the Syrian tradition, thereby promoting academic exchange and mutual understanding across denominational boundaries.
