Syriac Churches encountering Islam
The first Pro Oriente Colloquium Syriacum took place in Salzburg in 2007 and focused on the theme “Syriac Churches Encountering Islam.” It highlighted the extent to which Christians and Muslims have jointly shaped a remarkable chapter of history. From its very beginnings, Islam came into close contact with forms of Christianity rooted in the Syro-Aramaic heritage and tradition, regardless of whether these communities were Arabic-speaking.
The political context of the colloquium was undoubtedly influenced by the aftermath of the invasion of Iraq and the profound instability and radical transformations that followed.
Among the distinguished scholars who participated were Sidney Griffith (Washington, DC, USA), Theresia Hainthaler (Frankfurt, Germany), Herman Teule (Nijmegen, The Netherlands), Martin Tamcke (Göttingen, Germany), and Louis Sako (Baghdad, Iraq).
