Syriac Christianity in the Middle East and India
The second Colloquium Syriacum, held in Vienna in 2009, focused on the theme “Syriac Christianity in the Middle East and India Today: Contributions and Challenges”. In light of ongoing religious tensions with Islam, church leaders and scholars sought to adopt a constructive and forward-looking perspective, continuing the approach established at the first colloquium. They highlighted the significant contributions of Syriac Christians to their societies, particularly in the fields of culture, education, and civil society, both historically and in contemporary contexts across the Middle East and India. At the same time, they addressed the major challenges faced today in living out and professing the Christian faith within pluralistic and multi-religious societies, with particular attention to issues of religious freedom, education, and personal status.Among the participating expert scholars were Sebastian Brock (Oxford, UK), Sidney Griffith (Washington DC, USA), Anthony O’Mahony (London) Herman Teule (Nijmegen, The Netherlands) and Martin Tamcke (Göttingen, Germany)
