Syriac Identity and Witness between Homeland and Diaspora
Because of ongoing wars and challenging economic conditions in the homelands of the Churches of the Syriac tradition – especially in the Middle East – migration, displacement, and diaspora have consistently shaped the scholarly work of the Colloquia Syriaca. In response to these realities, the Forum Syriacum chose to address these challenges by focusing the 5th Colloquium Syriacum in Vienna 2017 on the theme: “Identity and Witness: The Contribution of the Syriac Tradition to the Universal Church and the World”.
In particular, younger scholars with expertise in diaspora studies offered fresh insights into local and regional contexts, as well as the pastoral challenges they entail. Key topics included the significance and identity of the Syriac tradition, Syriac identity within an ecumenical framework, and questions of integration and engagement with wider society.
