How to get to Salzburg
By train: Salzburg is on the train line between Munich and Vienna. There is at least one train per hour in either direction (see ÖBB and DB).
By plane: Salzburg has its own airport; moreover, the airports in Munich and Vienna are within easy reach. Trains from Vienna Airport take about 3 hours (see ÖBB); trains from Munich Airport take about the same time (see DB). Salzburg Airport is very close to town; bus line 2 takes you to the main station; no 10 to the town centre – see here.
By car: If you are travelling by car, please remember that Austria requires a toll charge (vignette) to use the motorway system. You can purchase the vignette at petrol stations near the Austrian border or at motorway service areas throughout Austria.
Public transport in Salzburg
Salzburg has an extensive public bus transport system. Tickets are available at Trafik (newsagents) throughout the city – including locations in the airport departure hall and main station – as well as at ticket machines at selected bus stops. You can choose between single tickets and 24-hour tickets, both of which need to be time-stamped on the bus. If you are staying at a hotel, ask at reception whether free daily tickets are available for each day of your stay.
You can also purchase electronic tickets through the SalzburgMobil or Salzburg Verkehr apps, one of which you might want to download for route planning and real-time traffic updates. For more details about the Salzburg bus system, visit Salzburg Verkehr.
The largest taxi company in town can be reached calling 0043/662/8111.
