Music in Motion: Transnational Musical Film Production in France and Germany since 1940

The project examines the diverse forms of musical migration in France, using the example of musical films from 1940 onwards as a dynamic musical phenomenon in 20th-century music history.

The aim is to analytically explore and describe processes of cultural dynamisation through a nuanced application of the concept of mobility.The recognition of culture as a process (rather than a state or an object) leads to an analysis of various dimensions of migration, which are discussed in the study.

This brings processes of dynamisation (personal and cultural migration; aesthetic transformations) to light and captures aesthetic phenomena within the context of their social reference frameworks.

Methodologically, the project combines elaborate sociological and cultural studies approaches with musicological theories reaching from sound studies to audio-visual analysis and media theory.
