Research interests

Our group is unique in its integration of synthesis, characterization, electromagnetic simulations and device testing. We investigate how geometry at the nanoscale affects function within complex three-dimensional systems that have strong interactions with light.

Our approach:  

  • Structure optimization based on three-dimensional electromagnetic numerical simulations
  • State-of-the-art chemical syntheses with a sub-5 nm spatial resolution in all three dimensions
  • Fundamental studies in photoelectrochemistry (water-splitting photocathodes), plasmonic photocatalysis (gas phase photomethanation) and Surface-Enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)                      

Our three-dimensional electrochemical axial lithography (Nano Lett. 2018,  3DEAL) technique can be used to pattern macroscopic arrays of single-crystalline Si micro- and nanowires with feature dimensions down to 5 nm. 

We are currently using 3DEAL to design substrates for 3D surface-enhanced Ramanspectroscopy (SERS) and water-splitting photoelectrodes.
