German Language Courses
at the Department of German Studies

WHAT is offered?

The Department of German Studies offers German language courses for levels A1 to C1, – a total of seven course levels is available (see course programme).

The basic level courses (A1 and A2) are 8 hours per week (worth 12 ECTS), all other courses are 6 hours per week (worth 9 ECTS). In addition, a 2-hour language skills course especially for oral communication and pronunciation (worth 3 ECTS) is offered at level B2.

There is a course fee of 30€ per contact hour per week per semester. An 8-hour-course amounts to 240€ per semester, a 6-hour-course to 180€ and a 2-hour-course to 60€. Students who pay 752,92€ student fees per semester are exempted from the course fee.

In the German courses all language skills (reading, listening, speaking, writing) as well as grammar and vocabulary are trained. There are regular homework assignments and language quizzes/small tests as well as a mid-term and final exam. Detailed information and requirements will be given directly in the courses.

WHO can register for the German courses?

The German language courses at the Department of German Studies can be attended by:
– students in mobility programs (incoming students, e.g. with Erasmus, Joint Studies, BGSU…)
– regular students at the University of Salzburg
– non-regular students who do not require a student visa for Austria*.

* Please get information at the VPLUS = University course for the preparation of supplementary exams if you are a non-regular student and require a student visa or if you have applied for admission to a study program and need to prove a B2 level in German: Vorstudienlehrgang (VPLUS)

HOW can I register for the German courses?

Registration for the 2026/27 winter semester opens on 14 September 2026 at 3.00/3.15/3.30/3.45 p.m. directly in  PLUSonline.
➢ Registration for an A1 course (beginner level)
Registration takes place via PLUSonline. Please register directly for your language course.
Registration deadline: 30 September 2026

➢ Registration for an A2 course or higher (B1, B2, C1)
• You did not attend a German course at the Department of German Studies in the 2026 summer semester → Please register for the placement test. Registration deadline: 30 September 2026
• You attended and successfully completed a German course at the Department of German Studies in the 2026 summer semester → Please register directly for the next course in PLUSonline. Registration deadline: 25 September 2026

Do you need to take a placement test?
You must take a placement test if you have not previously attended a German course at the Department of German Studies or if your most recent course was more than one semester ago.Register here for the placement test:  LV – Detailansicht – PLUSonline – Universität Salzburg
Please note that confirmed places will only be allocated after the first course session.

Placement Test
The placement test will take place on Thursday, 01 October 2026, 9.00 a.m at Unipark Nonntal. Beginners do not take a placement test.
The placement test is compulsory if
• you have not yet taken a German course at the University of Salzburg.
• you didn’t take a German course in the previous semester.
• your current language level is not clear for other reasons.
