Angela Schottenhammer: Chinese Sources on maritime Asia

In cooperation with Tansen Sen (NYU Shanghai) and Geoff Wade (ANU, Australia) she plans to edit this source collection as a handbook with Brill (in the series Handbuch der Orientalistik) and at the same time create an open-access database, similar to our colleague Geoff Wade’s “Southeast Asia in the Ming Shi-lu” (http://www.epress.nus.edu.sg/msl/introduction).
Many international scholars have been involved in this project for quite some time. It was part of Schottenhammer’s long-standing research cooperation with the Indian Ocean World Centre at McGill University, Canada. In order to discuss final steps for the publication of the “Handbuch” (handbook) and provide involved scholars with the opportunity to exchange further ideas on this project, Schottenhammer organizes an international workshop on “Maritime Asia”, to be convened at the School of Economics, Shanghai University, from March 1-2, 2019, where she has received a reward as part of the Chinese “1000 Talents Program”.
The workshop is also part of the research activities of her “Crossroads Research Group” and a research project on “Seafaring, Trade, and Knowledge Transfer” (sponsored by the Gerda Henkel Foundation) and is carried out in cooperation of Shanghai University, the University of Salzburg, and McGill University.”
