CIVIS Blended Intensive Program (BIP) “Enhancing Skills in Polycrisis Management: African and European Approaches” is a practice-oriented course that requires pragmatic and collaborative approaches.

Following an online phase during the Summer Term 2026, students from different European and African countries came together from September 6–11 to explore approaches to managing polycrises, using waste management as a practical case study.

The in-person phase, organized and hosted by Makerere University (Uganda), with Prof. Dr. Anthony Tibaingana and Prof. Dr. Kanifa Kamatara, was particularly supported by the University of Salzburg, including the Department of Legal Theory, International and European Law (Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gudrun Zagel and Dr. Roman Puffer) and the Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS (Priv.-Doz. Dr. Sabine Hennig).

The programme highlights the importance of addressing interconnected challenges through cooperation across disciplines, institutions, sectors, and countries, as no single discipline or institution can provide all the knowledge and solutions needed to manage today’s complex global crises.
