Computer Science, Media Education, AI – Pick One? The Evolution of Curriculum Reform in Austria

This talk explores the changing landscape of informatics-related education in Austria, from early Computer Science courses to recent curriculum reforms. It highlights the introduction of Digital Education and the interplay between Computer Science, media education, and AI. Drawing on empirical research on teachers’ perspectives and professional development, as well as ongoing work on the upper secondary (AHS) curriculum since 2022, the talk connects policy ambitions with classroom realities. By combining historical insights, research findings, and curriculum design experience, the presentation ultimately asks: Can we really “pick one”?


Bio: Corinna Hörmann is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science Education at the Department of Computer Science. Her research focuses on CS education, digital education, and AI in education, with a particular emphasis on curriculum development and teacher professional development.
