Visit by the Austrian Institute for Human Rights (ÖIM) to Serbia as part of the HURIBO project
As part of the “Human Rights and Border Policies” project, DDr. Philip Czech and Dr. Alfred Benny Auner, LL.M. (WU), gave lectures on deprivation of liberty in the context of asylum and immigration law.
On May 6, the Faculty of Law at the University of Niš organized a workshop on “Deprivation of Liberty in the Context of Border Policy” within the bilateral “HURIBO” project, conducted in cooperation with the Austrian Institute for Human Rights (ÖIM), University of Salzburg. DDr. Philip Czech gave a lecture on deprivation of liberty in the context of migration and expulsion, while Dr. Alfred Benny Auner, LL.M. (WU) (Department of Public Law), spoke about the involvement of private actors in the detention of migrants.
The workshop brought together nearly 70 participants, including students, researchers, and legal practitioners, who engaged in an insightful discussion. Important questions were raised regarding migration policy, human rights standards, and the role of states and private actors in the apprehension/detention of foreign nationals.
During the visit, members of the project team also met with the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. Dr. Predrag N. Cvetković, to discuss opportunities for further institutional cooperation and to intensify academic exchanges of students and staff between the partner institutions.
We thank our project partners Prof. Dr. Maja Nastić, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Anđelija Tasić, and Prof. Dr. Mihajlo Cvetković for the exchange and for organizing the workshop!
