The congress was opened with speeches to the research community from Rector Heinrich Schmidinger, ÖMG-President Michael Oberguggenberger, DMV-President Michael Röckner and the chairman of the local organizing committee Clemens Fuchs. The presentation of the DMV Honorary membership to ERC-President Jean-Pierre Bourguignon and the Cantor Medal to Gerd Faltings were also celebrated.

The guests were invited to a reception in the Salzburg Residenz, which was hosted by the city and province of Salzburg.  “Mathematics can be found everywhere, in technology, in many other sciences. Mathematics can even be found in music” emphasized Deputy Governor Christian Stöckl in his welcome speech.

The 9 plenary lectures are a highlight of the conference. They are being given by some of the worldwide leaders of research from various fields of mathematics.  Among the most prominent are the first Austrian winner of the Fields Medal Martin Hairer (Warwick) and Lawrence Craig Evans (UC Berkeley), one of the world’s most influential and important analysts.

The other excellent plenary lecturers are Aleksey Kostenko (University of Vienna) and Michael Eichmair (University of Vienna), winners of the ÖMG-Förderungspreise (the prestigious award from the Austrian Mathematical Society) in 2016 and 2017 respectively, Gabriele Nebe (RWTH Aachen), Gigliola Staffilani (MIT), Michael Zieve (Michigan), Carola-Bibiane Schönlieb (Cambridge) and Ursula Hamenstädt (Bonn), who is giving this year’s Emmy-Noether Lecture.

On Thursday evening Walter Schachermayer (University of Vienna) will be logically debating the question “How probable is coincidence?” at a public lecture. The extensive lecture program consists of around 250 lectures, which are being held within the framework of 25 sections and minisymposia and cover all areas of mathematics.

The numerous side events running parallel to the conference include the Hochschultag (University day), the Teacher’s Day, the Student’s Conference, the 6th Austrian Statistical Days and two special sessions on the subjects bibliometrics und industrial mathematics. The exhibition “Women in Mathematics” and various book displays from scientific publishers can also be visited on the ground floor of the faculty.
On Wednesday afternoon the guests have the choice of enjoying a city tour or one of the attractive excursions to the surrounding area. The conference dinner in the Stieglkeller with traditional Austrian cuisine will then give the guests the chance to end the day in a relaxed atmosphere.
This is the fourth time that the ÖMG-DMV-Congress has taken place in Salzburg and the enthusiastic feedback from the guests is an indication that the success of the previous congresses in the years 1952, 1977 and 1997 is being continued and that the Department of Mathematics has been able to further enhance its national and international profile. This shows once more that the Department of Mathematics now is one of the areas of excellence in the PLUS, as Rector Heinrich Schmidinger already emphasized in his opening speech.
