Brief description

From the multilingual Habsburg Empire in the 19th century to today’s EU, which is also committed to multilingualism and linguistic diversity. The journey begins with Napoleon and the reorganisation of Europe at the Congress of Vienna and it ends with the Austrian Imperial Council, the world’s first multinational parliament, a “League of Nations in miniature”. Two members of the Imperial Council, who would not be necessarily expected to be members of this body, are presented as examples. Similarities and differences to the language policy of today’s European Union, successes and challenges, aspirations and reality will be closely examined using concrete examples. Serious and humorous aspects on the subject of “multilingualism” will round off the lecture.

Speaker

Born in the year of the Roman treaties in Aachen, the city of Charlemagne, and grew up in the Euregio Rhine-Meuse. Studied to become a teacher (French and history), taught in France for several years, then worked as an editor for Klett textbooks.
Almost 30 years experience as an EU translator for various specialised fields, including six years as language and cultural attaché at the Vienna Representation.
