Managerial staff
Mutual respect is the basis for a positive working, teaching and learning climate at the University of Salzburg. Executive and managerial staff bear a particular responsibility as role models.
As manager you have a duty of care towards your team members. This means that you are obliged to act, if you receive knowledge of incidents of discrimination, sexual harassment or bullying.
As soon as you have received knowledge of inappropriate behavior, you must implement appropriate remedial measures.
What to do if you receive knowledge of any incidents?
- Take every incident seriously! Do not downplay the situation or place blame on the person affected.
- First, assess the needs of the person involved
- What does the person need right now?
- Should the incident be addressed immediately, or would the person prefer to discuss further steps confidentially at this time?

Make it clear that, as a manager, you have a duty of care and must take appropriate remedial actions. This also means that, if necessary, confidentiality may not be maintained or remedial actions may be taken without the consent of the person concerned.

- The person affected agrees that remedial actions should be taken at this point –> immediately offer to have a conversation in a quiet location and talk about the situation

- The person affected does NOT wish that remedial actions are taken at this point –> refer the person to the relevant support services to receive confidential counseling
- In any case, inform the person affected about the available support services at the University of Salzburg. These support services offer confidential counseling and will take action only with the express consent of the person affected.
