| Thema der Dissertation | Meaning and Technology in the Post-Postmodernist World: The Spice Must Flow… Or Must It? What can the Dune Extended Series Reveal About Humanity’s Inherent Struggles |
In this dissertation, I want to explore what the Dune extended series could reveal about human nature and the inherent struggles of humankind when it comes to balancing the need for progress and growth with the means used to achieve it. Humankind seems to be always looking for something to achieve, for new barriers to break, be it through science, philosophy or a great business idea. This need to innovate and accelerate the switch from the now unsatisfactory status quo towards something seemingly more efficient can give birth to charismatic leaders and unforeseeable consequences. I want to analyze this tendency of people to hide behind their machines or the actions of a nameless society to inflict suffering upon others, all the while absolving themselves of any responsibility, as they believe to not have acted themselves. Moreover, I find it extremely important to consider the loss of meaning and the current culture of self-optimization that is encouraged by the present global context, as perhaps one of the main reasons of indifference and cruelty towards oneself and others.
