Abstract:
Arthropod-borne viruses (“arboviruses”) are a major source of emerging infectious diseases worldwide. Understanding arbovirus transmission and emergence is important for predicting and preventing future outbreaks, and requires coordination between virologists, entomologists, and public health officials. Dr. Camp began his scientific career as an entomologist, and then turned his focus to studying highly pathogenic viruses. Over the last three years as a PostDoc at VetMedUni Vienna, his research combines entomology and virology to address aspects of mosquito behavioural ecology which influence virus transmission and evolution. He will present recent advances in the study of mosquito-borne viruses that are presently circulating in Austria, including urban and sylvatic transmission of flaviviruses (West Nile virus and Usutu virus).
