Malaria is one of the great challenges of humanity and new vaccines are necessary to fight this disease. Within this work it could be shown that two potent vaccine candidates, Pfs25 and Pfs28, could be produced in N.tabacum and N.benthamiana. The recombinant protein could be purified via IMAC and over 1 mg/mL could be accomplished from six protein preparations to conduct further experiments. In mouse, immunization elicited antibodies against Pfs25 and Pfs28 that were used in transmission-blocking experiments and other assays to show the neutralizing effect of the antibodies. The present results support the idea of the development of a plant-derived malaria vaccine.
