Human Th2 but not Th9 cells release IL-31 in a STAT6/NF-κB-dependent way

Abstract:
IL-31 is an IL-4-induced cytokine associated with allergic disorders. As Th2 and Th9 cells are implicated in allergy and both depend on IL-4, we investigated IL-31 expression by human CD4+ T cell subsets, with a special emphasis on these two Th cell subsets. We found that only Th2 cells, but not Th9 cells secrete IL-31, and identified novel mediators that are critically involved in the induction of IL-31 in Th2 cells and the repression of IL-31 in Th9 cells.
