Gottfried Schweiger primarily works in the fields of political philosophy and ethics, but also in social theory and sociology, educational sciences, and childhood studies. His research interests are wide-ranging and include issues of poverty and social exclusion, migration, childhood and youth, education, social work, gender studies, as well as digitalization and artificial intelligence. He places particular emphasis on theories of recognition and the Capability Approach.
Gottfried Schweiger is co-founder and co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Praktische Philosophie and a member of the organizing team of the Tagung für Praktische Philosophie, which he organized for ten years at the University of Salzburg. He also leads the working group Philosophische Fachzeitschriften within the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Philosophie. Additionally, he is co-editor of the popular philosophy blog Praefaktisch and of the book series Bildung – Erziehung – Kindheit published by J.B. Metzler (Springer Nature). Schweiger is also Associate Editor of the Journal of Ethics and the Journal of Human Development and Capabilities. He is the author of numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and the author or editor of several books and edited volumes.
In recent years, he has engaged in close collaborations with, among others, Johannes Drerup (TU Dortmund), Michael Kühler (FH Dortmund), Karoline Reinhardt (Passau), Jeff Frank (St. Lawrence), and Facundo Valverde (Buenos Aires).
