Andreas Koch is a Professor of Social Geography in the Department of Sociology and Social Geography at the University of Salzburg. He studied Geography, Political Science, and Spatial Planning at LMU Munich. He earned his doctorate in 1996 at RWTH Aachen with a dissertation on the impact of electronic banking services on socio-spatial relationships. In 2004, he completed his habilitation at RWTH Aachen with a thesis on the transferability of Luhmann’s systems theory approach to socio-spatial phenomena.
He was a research assistant at WU Vienna in 2000 and has been a visiting researcher at institutions including the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the University of Bucharest (Department of Political Science), and the University of Klagenfurt. He maintains close research ties with Umeå University.
Currently, he and his team are part of Universitäten und nachhaltige Entwicklungsziele (UniNEtZ), where they are working on Sustainable Development Goal 1 (No Poverty).
His research interests include geographies of poverty and inequality, rural peripheries in Europe, local activism (commons, municipalism), as well as the modeling of socio-spatial phenomena.
