Tutorial at the Department of Environment and Biodiversity
Tutors are employed as student assistants by the lecturers of the respective subject. As senior students, they have usually attended the course themselves and can therefore empathize well with younger students and support them effectively. At the Department of Environment and Biodiversity, we look for numerous tutors each semester to assist with our courses. Our tutors make an important contribution to our teaching, relieve our lecturers, and serve as valuable learning partners for our students.
What does a tutor do?
The role of our tutors is to assist in the preparation, execution, and follow-up of exercises and field trips. Possible tasks include supporting our lecturers in compiling teaching materials, setting up experiments, gathering information, and planning organizational procedures in advance. In addition, tutors can contribute to pre- and post-discussions, the development of course materials, and supervising students during the course.
Framework conditions for tutors
- Tutors must be enrolled students.
- A maximum of 4 semester hours per semester may be undertaken, and the position as a tutor is limited to a maximum of 4 years.
- Tutors may not simultaneously be participants in the course they are supervising.
- A one-hour tutorial corresponds to 30 working hours. Smaller tutorials are also possible (e.g., a half-hour tutorial with 15 working hours).
- For a one-hour tutorial (30 working hours), there is an entitlement to 3 hours of leave.
- According to the collective agreement, tutors may not hold a Magister, Master’s, or doctoral degree in the respective field of study. In certain cases, a similarly compensated teaching assignment may be granted instead (see below “Special regulation for doctoral candidates”).
- An additional employment relationship with the University of Salzburg is possible up to a total workload of 20 hours per week/semester (including the tutorial). If this limit is exceeded, one of the employment relationships must be terminated or reduced.
