Stephan M. Schweighofer is an Austrian educational scientist and pedagogue. His research interests are primarily in the fields of democracy education (including European citizenship education), global citizenship education and sociological values research. Methodologically, he belongs to the field of qualitative educational research, in which he specializes in participatory research and design thinking.

He has been a research assistant at the Department of Education at Paris Lodron University Salzburg since October 2021.Previously, Schweighofer worked as a lecturer at the Università Roma III in Rome, where he taught on the “Intercultural Communication” course. He studied German and Italian as a teacher at the University of Graz as well as in Florence and Coimbra and completed a postgraduate certificate course in International Relations and Diplomacy in Geneva.

In addition to his research activities, Stephan Schweighofer attaches great importance to third mission projects that link science and society. He is particularly interested in cooperation between schools and universities. In this context, he manages and supports various interdisciplinary education and democracy projects.
In addition to his teaching activities in pedagogical education (school and society, democracy education, lesson planning, etc.), he also teaches at the HTL Trenkwalderstraße in Innsbruck.

In 2023, he received the “Europastaatspreis” from the Austrian Federal Chancellery in the category “Europe in Education”. In 2024, he was honored with the “45 under 45” fellowship of the Lucerne Dialogue.
