The Department of English and American Studies, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor with Qualification Agreement (in accordance with the Universities Act and the Employees Act and as per §27 of the Collective Agreement for University Employees). The designated field of the position is Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) (Fremdsprachendidaktik). Upon successful completion of the agreed qualification objectives, the position will become permanent (Associate Professor). Responsibilities
  • achievement of individually agreed qualification targets within a specified period,
  • independent teaching of 4 hours per week (rising to 8 hours upon completion of the qualification phase),
  • independent research in the field of English Foreign Language Education,
  • building international research networks and collaborating with relevant areas of the University of Salzburg and with partner schools,
  • contributing to the organisation of teaching and research in the subject area.
Employment Requirements
  • doctorate (PhD) in one of the following fields: English Foreign Language Education, English Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or Educational Linguistics,
  • dissertation at least partly published (i.e., relevant journal articles or confirmed book contract),
  • demonstrated research and university-level teaching experience in English Foreign Language Education and related linguistic fields (Second Language Acquisition, TESOL, Educational Linguistics),
  • experience in applying for external research funding,
  • proven pedagogical expertise,
  • excellent spoken and written English.
Desirable Additional Qualifications
  • teaching qualification in English,
  • school teaching experience and familiarity with the Austrian school system,
  • excellent research record and publications at an international level,
  • interest in translating linguistic and pedagogical research into methods and materials for English teaching in schools,
  • international experience,
  • very good command of German (C1), or willingness to acquire it.
