Two PhD Positions on EU Enlargement and European Integration at the Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS)
The Salzburg Centre of European Union Studies (SCEUS) at Paris Lodron University of Salzburg is inviting applications for two doctoral research positions (30 hours/week) within the Jean Monnet Policy Network AdvancEU, starting on 1 September 2026.
The positions offer the opportunity to develop an original PhD project on key challenges facing the European Union while becoming part of an international research network comprising 15 partner universities across 12 countries.
PhD Position in Political Science
The Political Science position focuses on the political dimensions of EU enlargement, institutional reform, and the public acceptance of European integration.
Potential research topics include political conflicts and debates surrounding EU enlargement, the role of political parties and public opinion, democratic developments in candidate countries, differentiated integration, and questions of political legitimacy in the enlargement process.
PhD Position in Law
The Law position focuses on the legal dimensions of EU enlargement readiness and the integration of candidate countries into EU processes.
Potential research topics include legal frameworks for pre-accession integration, differentiated integration models, institutional and constitutional reform within the European Union, rule of law conditionality, and legal approaches to strengthening the Union’s capacity to accommodate future enlargements.
Working within the AdvancEU Network
Both positions are embedded in the Jean Monnet Policy Network AdvancEU, which examines the political, legal, and societal conditions for future EU enlargement. In addition to pursuing a doctoral degree, successful candidates will contribute to collaborative publications, international workshops, policy briefs, and academic conferences.
