What will I learn?
In the innovative Master’s program Data Science everything revolves around how to use data in an effective, knowledgeable, and responsible way in order to generate knowledge and insight. This is and will remain an area of high relevance not only for enterprises, governments, and other organizations, but it also affects everyone individually. Furthermore, obtaining, modeling, analyzing, and interpreting data are central in the scientific endeavor at universities and other research institutions. The Data Science program covers the gamut from raw data to information, from information to knowledge, and from knowledge to making smart decisions.

What makes Salzburg so special as a place to study?
International students regularly vote Salzburg as the most attractive city for studying in Austria, and one of the top ten study locations in Europe. Why? Studying in Salzburg means studying in a fantastic and unique cultural and natural setting. And the academic environment is perceived as motivating and dynamic. Excellent student-to-teacher ratios and the personal atmosphere in the (2022 newly founded) Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Interfaces, as well as the Faculty of Digital and Analytical Sciences distinguish Salzburg from anonymous mass universities in bigger cities. In Salzburg, quality matters. Among the top scientists who are leading the Salzburg Data Science initiative (by the way: the first one established at an Austrian university: already since 2016), you can find several younger professors – in the last years, they have established the University of Salzburg as a first-class international science hub. And within Salzburg, cooperations galore across disciplines, departments, and institutions. This has become an ideal location for interdisciplinary work.

Which career opportunities do I have?
The term „Data Science“ encompasses diverse, but related areas of competence, including “classical” applied statistics, as well as data analytics, business analytics, business intelligence, and several areas of computer science. This mixture represents one of the hottest academic employment markets with very high demand for comprehensively trained and educated Data Scientists. Among the key employment opportunities are research and development departments of enterprises, government offices, and research institutions, in areas as diverse as, for example, medicine, biotechnology and pharmaceutical research, software development, finance and insurance, telecommunications, production, and logistics, to name a few.
