Salzburg dialect
Language connects people, shapes identity and builds community. Salzburg is not only rich in dialects and regional expressions but also in linguistic diversity shaped by migration, academia and tourism.
- The Salzburg dialect belongs to the Bavarian group of dialects and is an important part of local cultural heritage.
- Dialect is a marker of identity and is maintained in everyday life as well as in folk culture – from songs and traditions to literature.
- At the same time, the dialect varies between the city and the countryside: urban Hochdeutsch versus rural dialect (Mundart).
