Educational Research: Comparative Educational Science and Migration research

The Educational Research Working Group: Comparative Education and Migration Research (BF) adopts a holistic approach that systematically combines educational philosophy, critical educational theory and empirical educational research. Our focus lies on linking international comparative research perspectives with issues relating to migration and society. We engage intensively with the diverse life circumstances and opportunities for fulfilment of individuals, particularly against the backdrop of global inequalities. In light of current challenges, including migration, digitalisation, globalisation, environmental issues and health, we examine the complex interplay between politics, educational theory and educational practice. Our aim is to gain in-depth knowledge for political reflection that can make a decisive contribution to shaping a more just society. Our areas of focus include globalisation, migration and transformation.

We integrate a diverse range of methodological approaches, including qualitative and quantitative methods such as latent class analysis, correspondence analysis, objective hermeneutics and text-interpretative methods. Our methodological repertoire also includes subject-oriented methodology, which enables a multifaceted analysis. In our research, we focus on various areas, including political education, conflict research, reception studies and intergenerational education research, with a particular focus on migrant families. Our work is largely guided by a theory and research of education inspired by cultural studies. In doing so, we place great value on a constructive theory of science that helps us to understand the complexity of the educational landscape and to develop innovative solutions.
