Biographical sketch

Oliver Diwald completed his PhD studies at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien, A). He was awarded with an Erwin-Schrödinger fellowship of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and moved to the Surface Science Center of the University of Pittsburgh (PA, USA, 2001-2003). There he investigated in collaboration with John T. Yates Jr. photochemical and photophysical processes on pure and doped TiO2 single crystal surfaces. After habilitation in physical chemistry in 2006, he was promoted to an Associate Professor at the TU Wien. In May 2009, OD accepted a position as Professor for Particle Synthesis at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering of the Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU, D). Since April 2013 Oliver Diwald holds a chair in Materials Science and Crystallography at the Paris-Lodron University Salzburg (PLUS, A) where he heads the Department of Chemistry and Physics since October 2019.

Departmental roles
  • Head of the Department Chemistry and Physics of Materials (since Oct. 2019)
  • Head of the Working group Materials and Interfaces

University roles
  • Member of the Academic Senate (since Oct. 2019)
Research

Engineering materials at different length scales has become a critical requirement for further advances in the production and development of functional (nano)materials. Their function, stability and spatial organization are determined by interfacial processes and are at the focus of our research. Current research activities are related to

  • Inorganic nanoparticles: growth, functionalization and implementation.
  • Defect chemistry in metal oxides
  • Design and engineering of intergranular regions in functional ceramics (cerafaces)
