At the centre of the research project is the (educational) scientific reappraisal of incidents of violence at the former Salzburg ‘deaf-mute institution’ (now: Josef Rehrl School as part of the Provincial Centre for Hearing and Sight Education) in the years 1950-1980 (planned). With the (educational) scientific analysis of forms of violence (physical, psychological and sexualised, sexual and epistemic forms of violence) against children and young people, the focus is on the analysis of multidimensional power and dependency relationships that take place on different levels: Between the children and the educators, as institutional power (here: school and home structures), and as an expression of a certain understanding of education. In doing so, historical-cultural and educational science perspectives on structures of power and violence will be pursued and several levels will be included. Consequently, the planned research should be particularly interested in the organisational structures that foster violence, the educational spaces that enabled different forms of violence and the status of the actors exercising power within the institution.
