Fu Jen Catholic University

Fu Jen Catholic University, or FJU for short (Chinese: 天主教輔仁大學 / 天主教辅仁大学, Pinyin: Tiānzhǔjiào Fǔrén Dàxué, abbreviated as 輔仁大學 / 辅仁大学), is a university sponsored by the Catholic Church located in the Xinzhuang District of New Taipei City, Taiwan. It is a reestablishment of the Catholic University of Beijing, which was confiscated by the People’s Republic of China. Fu Jen is the oldest Catholic university in the Chinese-speaking world founded by Benedictines and is directly subordinate to the Congregation for Catholic Education of the Holy See. It also serves as a non-governmental actor in Track II diplomacy regarding relations between the Holy See and Taiwan. History The “Catholic University of Peking” was founded in 1925 by American Benedictine missionaries and was renamed Fu Jen Catholic University in 1927. Abbot Alfred Joseph Koch, OSB, was the last chancellor from the Benedictine Order. On April 29, 1933, Pope Pius XI transferred the administration of the university to the Society of the Divine Word. [12] The first rector after the university was taken over by the Divine Word Missionaries was the American Fr. Joseph Murphy, SVD (1895–1935), who, however, died after a short tenure. Subsequently, Superior General Fr. Josef Grendel SVD (1878–1951) appointed the editor of Anthropos, Fr. Rudolf Rahmann SVD (1902–1985), as the new rector of Fu Jen. Rahmann assumed the post in October 1936 and held it until 1945. In 1945, the American Fr. Harold Rigney, SVD (1900–1980), became rector of Fu Jen, and Rahmann became vice-rector. In 1949, the university was seized by the People’s Republic of China and incorporated into Beijing Normal University in 1952. In 1960, Fu Jen University was reestablished by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Taiwan. The Fu Jen campus (including the affiliated hospital) covers 40 square kilometers, making it roughly the same size as Vatican City or the Osaka University campus in Toyonaka. n the 2006 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the university was ranked 417th, and in 2008, it was ranked 533rd. It is thus Taiwan’s top private university and ranks among the top ten universities in Taiwan. Source:  Wikipedia The Fu Jen Catholic University Fact Sheet can be found  here.
