Vice Rector and Interim Rector ao.Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Martin WEICHBOLD

Prof. Dr. Martin Weichbold was born in 1969 in Öblarn, Upper Styria. After graduating from the neusprachliches Gymnasium in Stainach, he studied sociology, political science and psychology in Salzburg. After graduating (1992) and obtaining his doctorate (1995) with an empirical-cultural-sociological dissertation on the concept of nature in national park concepts, he worked as a research assistant in the SFB F012 “Theories and Paradigm Pluralism in the Sciences: Rivalry, Exclusion or Cooperation”. This was followed by research on (then new) online and other computer-based surveys, which led to his habilitation in sociology and empirical social research in 2005 (title of the habilitation thesis: Touchscreenbefragungen. Neue Wege in der empirischen Sozialforschung). He was subsequently appointed Associate University Professor.

Martin Weichbold’s research interests lie in the field of empirical social research; in addition to numerous publications on methodological and methodological topics (especially on interviews, intercultural comparison and data quality), there are also works on environmental, tourism and art sociology as well as on adult education.

At PLUS, Martin Weichbold was Head of the Department of Political Science and Sociology from 2007 to 2011, Chair of the Curriculum Committee for the doctoral programme at the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences (KGW) from 2012 to 2015, and Dean of the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences from 2015 to 2019. In 2019 he took over the co-leadership of the programme area (Inter)mediation. Music – Mediation – Context of the Inter-University Institution for Science and Art and finally became Vice Rector for Academic Affairs under Rector Hendrik Lehnert.

In the course of his academic career, Martin Weichbold has held various positions in sociological societies: from 2003 to 2017 he was a member of the editorial board of the Austrian Journal of Sociology, from 2013 to 2017 he was spokesperson of the section “Sociological Methods and Research Designs” of the Austrian Sociological Society (ÖGS), and from 2017 to 2019 he was president of the ÖGS. Since 2017 he is a member of the National Advisory Board of the Austrian Social Science Data Archive. From 2015 to 2018 he was vice-president and since 2018 secretary general and president-elect of the International Sociological Association RC33 (Research Committee Logic and Methodology in Sociology).

Martin Weichbold’s responsibilities as Vice Rector for Academic Affairs include not only the regular undergraduate programmes, but also all postgraduate courses, doctoral programmes and exchange programmes. In addition, as Executive Vice Rector, he represents the Rectorate externally and is responsible for the areas of budget, personnel and international affairs.
