Vice Rector Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kristin DE TROYER

Prof. Dr. Kristin De Troyer was born in 1963 in Ninove, Belgium. After her education at the Royal Athenaeum, she studied Religious Studies (Candidature and Licentiate, i.e. BA and MA), Philosophy (BA), Theology (STB and STL, i.e. BA and MA) and completed her teacher training at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium (1981-1987). She completed her MA in Religious Studies with a comparative study on Michel Foucault and Jos Van Ussel, her SLT (MA) in Theology with a study on the textual variants in Hebrew, Greek, Syriac and Aramaic texts of the Book of Esther chapter 7. She then joined the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands, where she worked towards her PhD on Esther chapter 8 (Hebrew and Greek texts). She combined a text-critical approach with translational analysis (1990-1997). 

During her doctoral studies she worked as a research assistant in the Department of Old Testament at the Catholic University of Leuven (1987-1989), as publisher of the Catholic Bible Foundation of the Netherlands (1987-1990) and later as (founding) publisher of Kok Pharos Publishers, also in the Netherlands (1990-1995). The publisher was later integrated into Peeters Publishers, Belgium (1996-1998). De Troyer was also a lecturer in Old Testament (later head of department) at the Catholic Seminary Breda in the Netherlands (1989-1998).

After completing her studies, she became Associate Professor in 1998, then from 2002 Professor of Hebrew Bible at Claremont School of Theology and Claremont Graduate University, Claremont, California, USA (1998-2008). She was then appointed to the University of St Andrews, Scotland, UK (2008-2015), where she also held the position of Dean of Arts and Divinity in recent years. In 2015 she was offered a professorship in Salzburg, where she teaches Old Testament Studies. Her focus is on textual criticism, comparing the older biblical traditions and attempting to reconstruct the oldest textual history. She has edited several ancient Greek papyri (Gonnelli, Firenze, Italy). She edits four series and a journal and is a member of the Council of the Society of Biblical Literature (Altanta, Georgia, USA). She is also a member of the Presidium of the Austrian Research Foundation and (academic) secretary of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.

As Vice-Rector, she will be responsible for knowledge management and communication.
