Merit Scholarships
Merit-based scholarships at the University of Salzburg for the 2025/26 academic year:Newletter
Amount of the merit-based scholarship: €750.00 to €1,500.00
1. Application:
Applications for a merit-based scholarship, addressed to the Vice-Rector for Teaching and Students, must be submitted to the relevant faculty office by 30 October 2026, accompanied by all the supporting documents required to assess academic performance.
2. General requirements:
- Compliance with the duration of eligibility (statutory minimum duration of study and one tolerance semester per degree programme or per section; Section 18 of the Study Act (StudFG)), taking into account any valid reasons (Section 19 of the Study Act (StudFG))
- An average mark of no lower than 2.00 for the examinations or academic papers used for assessment
- Austrian citizenship or equivalent status within the meaning of Section 4 of the StudFG
- Enrolment as a full-time student during the period of study
- Fulfilment of the specific conditions of the call for applications (see point 3).
3. Special conditions for applications:
- Only examinations successfully passed or academic papers approved during the 2025/26 academic year (i.e. between 1 October 2025 and 30 September 2026) will be taken into account. Only examinations required for the completion of the degree programme or stage of study may be submitted.
- Recognised examinations: For examinations taken externally, the date of assessment must fall within the assessment period. Internal recognition will not be taken into account.
- Bachelor’s programmes: 50 ECTS course/subject examinations: ND ≤ 2.00
- Master’s programmes:
- Option a) 50 ECTS course/subject examinations: ND ≤ 2.00.
- Option b) 50 ECTS including Master’s thesis and Master’s examination: Master’s thesis: grade ‘Very Good’ + Master’s examination: grade ‘Very Good’ or ‘Good’; to make up the total of 50 ECTS, course/subject examinations with a weighted average mark (ND) ≤ 2.00 must be provided.
- Option c) 50 ECTS from course/subject examinations in the Bachelor’s and consecutive Master’s programmes, provided the Master’s programme follows on from the Bachelor’s programme within the period of study: average mark (ND) ≤ 2.00
- Doctoral programmes: Thesis: grade ‘Very Good’ + thesis defence: grade ‘Very Good’ or ‘Good’
- Diploma programme in Catholic Theology:
- Option a) 50 ECTS course examinations: ND ≤ 2.00
- Option b) 21 ECTS course examinations: ND ≤ 2.00 + 5 ECTS diploma examination: grade ‘Very Good’ or ‘Good’ + 24 ECTS diploma thesis: grade ‘Very Good’
(GPA = grade point average, weighted according to ECTS)
4. Submission:
a) An application may only be submitted in person or by post.
b) Required documents:
- the relevant form: Form
- Proof of academic progress (excluding recognised credits) for the relevant degree programme: examinations taken to the minimum extent required in accordance with point 3, which are to be included in the calculation of the grade point average, must be marked
- the current academic transcript
- Notifications of recognition for examinations taken externally (copies)
- Evidence of any delays in studies within the meaning of Section 19 of the Study Act (StudFG)

Applicants will be notified of the decision in writing.

Support Scholarships
Support scholarships for the promotion of scientific work: Mitteilungsblatt
Amount of the support scholarships: 750,00 to 3.600,00 euros
The application must include:
a) the corresponding form: form-for-funding-scholarship_2024
b) the current student enrollment certificate
c) a content description of the scientific work (master’s thesis and diploma thesis, max. 1 page) or outline (dissertation). (Important: The scientific work must be registered in PAAV (PLUS Thesis Management) and approved by the Dean!)
d) a timeline for the completion of the work
e) a cost breakdown and financing plan (at least in the amount of 750,00 euros). The requested funding amount must not exceed the maximum possible funding amount of 3.600,00 euros. IT equipment purchases (e.g., hardware) and living expenses are not supported!
f) submission of at least one detailed review by a university teacher as specified in § 94 Abs. 2 UG 2002, addressing the cost breakdown and the student’s ability, based on previous academic performance and proposals for the work, to complete the work with above-average success
g) a declaration of commitment from the student to submit a report on the appropriate use of the scholarship, including all receipts or evidence, travel logs, etc., to the Dean of the respective faculty no later than three months after completion of the work
h) for equivalent foreign students (except EU citizens) → See the information sheet of the respective faculty
i) the application must be addressed to the Dean of the respective faculty (see also the form).
