Symposium: Ecology | Geomorphology | Statistics
Multidiversity in environmental successions – interdisciplinary views on the emergence of ecological complexity
March 28th – 29th 2019
University of Salzburg | NAWI | Hellbrunnerstraße 34
The current biodiversity crisis demands a detailed understanding of the mechanisms underlying the maintenance and generation of diverse ecosystems. Environmental successions provide an excellent opportunity to track the concerted and interdependent increase in plant, animal, and microbial diversity and to detect ecological processes involved in the generation of multidiversity. Natural successions often are initiated and affected by geomorphological surface processes and knowledge about them allows a precise age determination of communities. Furthermore, multidiversity datasets require state-of-the-art and innovative statistical analyses to extract meaningful results. The symposium fosters an advancement of interdisciplinary approaches towards an understanding of environmental successions and the generation of multidiversity. The symposium is a joint meeting of the Doctorate Schools  Dynamic Mountain Environments and Statistics and Applied Data Science of the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg and serves as kick-off event of the START-project “Successional Generation of Functional Multidiversity” granted to Robert R. Junker by the Austrian Science Fund ( FWF).
