Description
This course offers insights into selected cultural areas of Austria and other German-speaking countries. Topics include: culture and diversity, the city of Salzburg with an excursion to the Salzburg Museum, the German language, food culture with an excursion to a weekly market, media, personalities, business, and poetry. We will look at topics in more detail through your own personal cultural discoveries in the German-speaking world and reflect on, present and share them. Cultural findings from the participants* home countries will also contribute to enriching the intercultural exchange. All modes of communication (reception, production, interaction, mediation) will be covered in variety of activities.

Description
This course is particularly suitable for international students at the University of Salzburg Topics and questions of inquiry: Why do we misunderstand each other, and how can we resolve intercultural misunderstandings and conflicts? Why do intercultural conflicts arise? How can we describe, analyze, and solve intercultural conflicts? And: How to become more skilled in intercultural competence for our future work life? The lectures and the tutorial will investigate and cover all the questions above. Our major topics are in the context of study abroad, business relations, and educational settings. We will explore: the meaning of perception misunderstandings according to psychology, interpersonal perception in neuroscience, stereotypes, and prejudice. We will learn about the meanings of cultural standards and intercultural competence in conflict prevention and resolution. During our investigations, we will become familiar with critical incidents from everyday life and work and address them using multidimensional theories. On the topic of conflict management, we explore a wide range of academic disciplines, from psychology to cross-cultural communication, and also delve into popular science presentations (TED Talks and Spotify series). Materials will be posted on Canvas.
