Human-Centered AI: From Data & Algorithms to Interfaces

The ‘Human-Centered AI: From Data & Algorithms to Interfaces’ Doctoral College explores how artificial intelligence can be aligned with application-driven needs, societal values, comprehension, and governance. It integrates Statistics/Data Science, Reinforcement Learning, Algorithmics, Geoinformation, Privacy Engineering, Human-Computer Interaction, and Techno-Legal Research to examine AI as a socio-technical system. The college investigates how algorithms, law, and design can jointly produce statistically valid, transparent, lawful, and human-centered AI. It combines algorithmic theory and AI systems research with Salzburg’s strengths in the areas of geoinformation, as well as data science and interaction design. Through methodological rigor, computational innovation, and participatory research, the program fosters AI that is interpretable, adaptive, and ethically embedded in human contexts. The overarching mission of the DSP is to define Human-Centered AI as a field of synergy – uniting data, algorithms, interaction, and ethics to enable intelligent systems that are effective, interpretable, and socially responsible.
