Perspectives for the Austrian Healthcare System
The Doctorate School PLUS “Perspectives for the Austrian Healthcare System” promotes in-depth scientific engagement with the legal and economic framework of healthcare provision in Austria. It is based on the understanding that a high-performing healthcare system must continuously adapt to societal and economic challenges, for example through innovative care approaches, the use of modern technologies, or adjusted governance and financing mechanisms.
Law and economics shape the healthcare system in diverse ways and are mutually interrelated. While social and public law focus on issues such as access, planning, and regulation, health economics examines the efficiency, distribution, and impact of new healthcare models. The Faculty of Law and Economics at the University of Salzburg already possesses extensive expertise in certain areas; however, a great need for further research remains, especially at the interfaces between disciplines. The Doctorate School PLUS addresses this by fostering interdisciplinary perspectives for the research and further development of an innovative and sustainable healthcare system.
The structured doctoral program enables networking with peers working on related topics and offers a diverse range of workshops, seminars, excursions, and conferences. Through the involvement of external experts from academia and practice, interdisciplinary supervision where possible, and the consistent encouragement of academic lecturing and publishing activities, the program strengthens the scientific qualifications and visibility of its participants. It thus creates a productive environment for substantial research and sustainable contributions to the advancement of the Austrian healthcare system.
