Do you speak or learn a Romance, Slavic, or Nordic language at B1 level or above? Then you are warmly invited to participate in the CIVIS Language Cafés. These free online events bring together language enthusiasts from across Europe and offer an opportunity to practise language skills in an international environment, discover new languages, and experience multilingualism in action.

The language cafés are based on the concept of intercomprehension: participants speak different but related languages and are nevertheless able to communicate by using specific communication strategies. For example, one participant may speak Italian while others respond in French or Romanian, or Polish, Russian, and Czech may be used within the same discussion group. The Nordic languages likewise share many similarities that enable a multilingual exchange. The language cafés therefore promote not only the practical use of language skills but also awareness of linguistic diversity and plurilingualism in Europe.

Participation is open to all members of the CIVIS Alliance, including students and staff of the University of Salzburg. The cafés take place online via Zoom and are organised by Stockholm University in cooperation with the Language Centre of the University of Salzburg within the framework of the European University Alliance CIVIS and, in the case of the Online Romance Language Café, the University of Thessaly. Participation in the language cafés requires a one-time  registration. Once registered, you may participate in all language cafés offered.
