On 7 July 2026, the Dynamics of Disasters (DOD 2026) workshop was held in Salzburg, bringing together researchers and experts from around the world to discuss current challenges and innovative approaches in disaster risk reduction, disaster management, and resilience. Originally launched in Athens in 2006, the DOD workshop series has become an established international forum for interdisciplinary research on disaster dynamics.

This year’s edition marked the first time the workshop was hosted in Salzburg, representing an important milestone in the history of the series.The workshop focused on the evolving dynamics of natural and human-made disasters, the lessons learned from global crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and the growing impact of hybrid threats arising from the increasing interconnection of the physical and digital worlds. The presentations and discussions highlighted the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing the complex challenges faced by disaster management organisations, first responders, and society as a whole. A particular highlight was the keynote lecture delivered by Distinguished Professor Panos Pardalos (University of Florida), Chair of the DOD Steering Committee.Co-located with AGIT 2026 – the International Conference for Geoinformatics, the workshop provided an excellent platform for scientific exchange, international collaboration, and networking across disciplines.
