What will I learn?
In this BA degree course, students learn about the history of the fine arts, architecture and European urban construction from late antiquity to the present age. This includes painting, sculptures, graphic art, arts and crafts, photography, film, video and new media, as well as museology. The theory and the notion of art and its history are also part of the subject. The course also deals with interdisciplinary questions and aspects, as well as the so-called gender studies. In addition, it examines European-influenced art from other continents. The restriction on Europe/the European influence does not count so much for the architecture and fine arts of the 20th century. The subject also examines the processes of artistic work and deals with the techniques and materials used. By doing so, students also consider the ideational, political, social, as well as the institutional and personal conditions leading to or accompanying the creation of art.

Your courses take place in the modern building of the Unipark, where you can study in the modern library or meet other students on the rooftop terrace to learn together. Within a few minutes you can reach the baroque old town of Salzburg and further university buildings. Salzburg’s most important museums and galleries lie close to each other and can be reached by foot as well. We have excellently equipped university and departmental libraries. Furthermore, you can enjoy the benefits of studying at a small department where you won’t get lost in the crowd. Our faculty staff provides optimal support. Learning and seminar groups are of small size, so that students can study swiftly without delays. Salzburg provides excellent possibilities to work alongside your studies, e.g. in museums, galleries, or at the Salzburg Festival.

Which career opportunities do I have?
Various institutions carry out the tasks of collecting, maintaining, researching and imparting the contents of works of fine art and architecture. Art historians work in universities, research institutes, museums, monument preservation, publishing companies, newspapers and magazines, libraries, archives, and adult education. Further occupations for graduates can be found in the marketing of art, e.g., in dealing in art, auction houses, galleries, and also in art insurances and tourism. Government and municipal culture work offer further possibilities. We recommend students to acquire an individual profile by studying a wide variety of subjects and to be open towards all kinds of occupations after your graduation. Work placements during your studies further increase your chances at the employment market.
