What will I learn?
The BA degree course in Philosophy deals with the traditional problems of philosophy, new questions from the sciences and current questions regarding moral principles and responsibility. Traditional philosophical problems are, amongst others, the difference between knowing and believing, the boundary between right and wrong, and the problem of free will. More recent questions from the sciences dealt with by philosophy are, for example: What exactly does natural selection mean? Which statistical methods are suited best for which purposes in the sciences? All of the problems challenge us to define conceptions precisely, to reflect on methods, and to develop a more concise notion of our ideals.

What makes Salzburg so special as a place to study?
At the Department of Philosophy KGW at the University of Salzburg there are distinct emphases within the scope of Analytical Philosophy: philosophy of science (especially philosophy of physics, philosophy of climate change and methodology of the sciences), philosophy of logic, philosophy of the mind, philosophy of language, ethics, social philosophy, and more. Graduates do not only receive an excellent philosophical education, but are also excellently trained in the methods of philosophy. Graduates of our department are also very popular at international research and teaching institutions.

Which career opportunities do I have?
Similar to studying mathematics, studying philosophy does not serve to prepare for a specific career. Therefore, there is no standard career for a philosophy graduate. However, students gain skills and competences which are sought after on the modern employment market (e.g., argumentation skills, competence in ethical orientation). By completing additional courses, optional modules or specializations students can acquire a specific profile. Graduates often work in the following fields: science and culture management, ethical consulting, politics and political consulting, business consulting, information technology, environment protection, adult education, publishing, media, libraries/archives. Graduates who are ambitious to embark on an academic career may enrol in a Master’s degree course in Philosophy.
