What will I learn?

The BEd teacher training programme in the subject of History and Social Studies/Political Education imparts fundamental knowledge and competences from various historic fields divided into core subjects according to periods and themes, which are relevant for teaching history and political education at secondary schools. The teacher training programme at the University of Salzburg is part of the “Cluster Mitte”. Students learn how to relate specialist knowledge, skills relevant for teaching history (‘Fachdidaktik’), and theories and methods to each other, and to transfer them to their teaching practice according to the principles of teaching methodology. Students will be prepared for their future teaching careers by acquiring fundamental knowledge and methods of ‘Fachdidaktik’ as well as knowledge about the historic processes and source criticism. Students will learn how to promote an awareness of history and politics, which examines various interpretations of history, in their future pupils. At the same time, the teacher training programme encourages students to recognize the correlations between knowledge transfer, political controversies and debates of historical science, and to prepare these issues professionaly for lessons according to the curriculum and geared to their target group.

Which career opportunities do I have?

Graduates will be qualified to teach at new secondary schools (‘Neue Mittelschulen’), polytechnic schools, special needs schools, secondary schools and vocational schools with and without higher education entrance qualification. Why Salzburg?

The Department of History at the University of Salzburg offers research and teaching in seven core subjects (History of the Middle Ages, Modern History, Contemporary History, Austrian History, Non-European History and Global History, History of European Regions, as well as Economic, Social and Environmental History). Courses in Ancient History are offered by the Department of Classical Studies. Due to the individual support of the department’s staff, students are able to finish their degree course on time. They study in the beautiful World Cultural Heritage site of Salzburg’s old town. Most of the lecture courses and seminars, some of which are taught in English, take place in the building of the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences at Rudolfskai. By individual agreement, students may also take exams in English. A special distinction of the course offer are excursions, which are part of the BA and BEd curricula. Students travel to destinations within Austria and beyond, e.g. Cuba, Nicaragua, Ghana, Israel, Ireland, Poland, Italy, etc. The roof terrace on top of the building of the Faculty of Cultural and Social Sciences with a stunning view of the Fortress of Hohensalzburg invites students to study and relax. The University Sports Centre in Rif and local recreational areas in town offer plenty of possibilities to unwind after a busy day of studying.
