Vice Rector for Research and Sustainability

Vice Rector Univ.-Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Nicola HÜSING

Professor Nicola Hüsing was born in 1969 in Rheda Wiedenbrück, Germany. After graduating from the Mariengymnasium in Warendorf, she studied chemistry at the University of Würzburg. She graduated in 1993. She worked on her dissertation at the University of Würzburg/Germany, the Technical University of Vienna/Austria and the University of California in Los Angeles/USA and received her PhD from the University of Würzburg in 1997. She was then awarded an FWF Erwin Schrödinger Fellowship to conduct research at Sandia National Laboratory and the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, USA, before returning to Vienna University of Technology as a lecturer in 1998. She habilitated with a venia docendi for materials chemistry in 2003 and was appointed to a C4 professorship for inorganic chemistry at the University of Ulm in 2004. In 2010 she accepted a professorship for materials chemistry at the Department of Chemistry and Physics of Materials at the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg. From 2012 to 2015, she was also working group leader for electrochemical energy storage at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm, and since 2019 she has been Vice Rector for Research and Sustainability.

Nicola Hüsing develops new preparative approaches to highly porous (hybrid) materials with a focus on sustainable synthesis routes. Her research is highly interdisciplinary, combining innovative basic research and applicable materials with typical applications in Li-ion batteries, supercapacitors, (thermal) insulation or controlled drug release.

For several years she has been working on the wet chemical synthesis of highly porous and nanostructured solids. The focus is on inorganic and inorganic-organic hybrid materials. The scientific relevance of her research is reflected in about 90 original publications in peer-reviewed journals and 6 patent applications. Prof. Hüsing is co-author of a textbook (Synthesis of Inorganic Materials) and has written several book chapters and reviews on porous materials and sol-gel chemistry.

Nicola Hüsing has held a number of positions in recent years, including Vice-President of the Society of Austrian Chemists (GÖCH, 2011-2016). She was a member of the Selection Committee of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (2012-2019), a member of the Board of Trustees of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF, 2014-2019) and a member of the Expert Panel of the German Excellence Strategy (since 2020). She was elected corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in 2011 and full member in 2015. Since 2018 she is an elected member of the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC).

As Vice Rector for Research and Sustainability, she is responsible for the University’s research agendas and is the point of contact for all aspects of sustainability. Her portfolio also includes the University Library and Occupational Medicine (together with the Rector), Health and Safety and Environmental Management. In the interim Rectorate, she also has responsibility for Digitisation, Equality & Diversity, Procurement and General Business Services, and Structural Development. Together with the Executive Vice-Chancellor, she is responsible for decisions on changes to the establishment plan.
